Recently, we sat down with Dan Scott, Managing Director of DG Scott Electrical Contractors, to discuss the journey behind the business, what drives our work, and where we’re headed. From our roots in healthcare electrical installations to our vision for the future, here’s what Dan had to say.
I started the company because I was completing all the work for my employer and felt undervalued. With me completing all the work, I thought I may as well start my own business—I’m doing it anyway. One slight oversight was the fact I didn’t have the work, so my first job was a kitchen re-wire and built from there to what we have now.
Early on, I was very hands-on. Over time, I’ve learned to delegate more and trust the team—empowering people gets better results and frees me up to focus on the bigger picture.
Quality, reliability, and service. We don’t cut corners, and we stand by our work. Whether it’s an operating theatre or socket in a school, we aim for the same high standards.
Managing growth and cash flow. It’s a balancing act—taking on bigger projects without losing the personal touch or overstretching resources. Hiring the right people has been key.
We adhere strictly to IET regulations and all NICEIC standards. Every job gets inspected, and we use internal audits regularly. Training and site toolbox talks help keep the crew sharp and compliant.

We specialise in electrical installations within the healthcare sector, completing every install from bed wards through to operating theatres and every scanner in between. We’ve also been lucky enough to branch out into more maintenance roles within councils, student accommodation, and schools, undertaking electrical and mechanical maintenance.
Responsiveness and accountability. We communicate clearly, show up when we say we will, and fix problems without delay. A lot of our work comes from repeat clients or word of mouth because people trust us.
We start with a detailed site visit and quote, then assign a lead electrician to manage the job. Timelines and materials are agreed upon before we start. We update clients throughout the job and finish with a walkthrough and sign-off.
Transparency from day one. We keep communication clear and simple. If something changes, the client hears about it immediately. After completion, we follow up to make sure they’re satisfied.
Ongoing training is non-negotiable. I’m constantly reading updates from the IET and NICEIC, and we regularly attend trade shows and manufacturer seminars. We also invest in upskilling our electricians. Electricians also complete regular CPD, upskilling their knowledge using the NICEIC webinars.

We look for people with good attitudes and a genuine commitment to the trade—not just technical skills. We treat staff fairly, pay competitively, and create a work culture where people feel valued.
We support apprenticeships, fund external courses, and provide in-house refreshers. I believe in growing people from within.
How would you describe the culture at DG Scott Electrical? Professional but relaxed. We take the work seriously, but we’ve built a crew that looks out for each other. There’s a real sense of pride in what we do.
Smart monitoring and BEMS integration within healthcare facilities. They are adopting smart building management systems for automated control of lighting, HVAC, and critical systems, energy monitoring and reporting (often required by NHS Sustainability Guidelines), and condition-based maintenance enabled by smart metering and real-time diagnostics.
We’ve invested in training for solar PV, battery storage, and EV charger installations.
A big one. As properties become more automated, electricians aren’t just wiring lights anymore—we’re integrating systems, working with WiFi networks, and helping clients future-proof their properties.

Short-term, we’re streamlining operations and growing our commercial client base. Long-term, I’d like to expand into design-and-build partnerships and open a second branch in another region.
I want DG Scott to be known for integrity and high standards. Whether I’m here or not, I want the company’s name to stand for quality and trust in the industry.
Probably our first operating theatre. I had wanted to complete this for a few years—I had witnessed an installation a few years previously, and in my opinion, it is the pinnacle installation within the healthcare sector. We completed all the electrical work, including lighting, power mains, UPS/IPS, fire alarms, nurse call, and security systems. It was meaningful because the space serves a lot of people, helping with major operations.
Take the risk, be brave. Hard work, dedication, and you will succeed. Be curious, ask questions, and never stop learning. And be on time—it sounds simple, but reliability gets you noticed more than anything else.
Pricing a project from a layout, being awarded the project, and seeing a job completed and done right. There’s satisfaction in knowing that something you started from a drawing, then installed, works perfectly and makes a difference for the client.
At DG Scott Electrical, we’re proud of where we’ve come from and excited about where we’re going. Whether it’s a complex healthcare installation or routine maintenance, our commitment to quality, integrity, and client satisfaction remains unwavering.
